RIDE 2 ( Richmond - Malvern East) Option 1 = 16km? - Option 2 = 22km? Sounds Confusing, but isn't really!! Start at the Richmond Boulevard Carpark, Ride East - along Yarra River cycle track, until reaching the "suspended bridge" (Gardiners Crk.Bridge) under the freeway. Ride along this, pass under Glenferrie Rd, follow Gardiners Creek along until reaching the corner of Toorak Rd and the freeway. At this junction turn Left and cross the Freeway, down to Auburn Rd at the other side of Freeway. Go "back" along Auburn Rd, for a few meters, until finding the entry to the creek trail again (not far at all!) Turn Left and go under the Toorak Rd bridge, follow the path along for quite some distance, until reaching the "Burke Rd Tunnell" - after this tunnell turn right (follow line on trail) and then along the creek again until you reach another Bridge - Turn RIGHT and follow the creek trail.. Cross back across a bridge again just before High Street (Glen Iris) , then a left onto the "road" and along a short distance to re-join the trail, which goes around a corner under the High St. bridge, then a "steep uphill with corner", so be ready for it, it's not long but a little unexpected if it's your first time through this area. Then follow the trail (around to the left) along the creek and across a few roads and more bridges until you reach "The Golf Course". (Melways Map69 Ref B1.) Ride finish? (Return from here, about 16km?) Or - You have 2 options, either return the way you came, or you can do a "loop" along the Alamein Train Line. Also known as "The Anniversary Trail" There is a bridge heading North (with a steep uphill climb). If you go up the hill and follow the track along it will bring you back to the The Anniversary Trail and a nice flat piece of track that follows the train line for quite a distance. Starts going uphill after you pass Alamein Station! You can the chose to cut back along any road, (high St., Toorak or Riversdale) or there is a trail which re-joins the Gardiners Crk. trail you had just ridden on, however trying to describe where it is is a little difficult. (Pass Ashburton Station, then it's at the bottom of the hill on Prosper Parade. There is a land island "squiggle" in the road to make the traffic slow down (Melways Map 60, E8). Follow this trail (quite rough in places) along until you reach Nettleton Park Reserve, where you may recognise the bridge you had crossed earlier! Cross the bridge and head back along the track until you reach Richmond again. On the return trip you may use the Northern track, and will pass the old Auburn Velodrome, where you will probably see cyclists doing " Laps" for something to do! |

RIDE 3 ( Kew - Nunawding - via Eastern Freeway Trail ) Distance ?35km return? Medium ride. Go down the hill and continue Left (East) along track. Cross over Yarra Bend Road and follow the trail down to the Fairfield "Pipe Bridge". Cross over this - walk your bike if you need to, it is narrow and can be busy! - Then ride up (STEEP HILL!!) This one zig zags, but when you are almost at the top it gets even steeper. This brings you out on the corner of the Yarra Boulevard, good view of the City from here, however you will be heading Left again, down the hill to the East. This is a good downhill run, just watch out for faster cyclists, motorbikes and cars zooming by on here! This ends at the Chandler Highway, where you can either take the steps down (ramp for this purpose) From the bottom of the stairs you get an easy ride (for a while) along the Yarra River floodplain, passing the Guide Dogs Centre not far along. Follow the path along - pass the Kew Billabong, and the Kilby Rd Underpass, and continue up yet another (1 of 2 here) STEEP HILLS!! Once you reach the top of this there is a short sharp downhill onto Belford Rd, so be careful, and give way to riders coming up! Then there is a long downhill roll along the side of the Freeway which veers off toward the river again just before reaching Burke Rd. You will pass a bridge on your left, DON'T cross it - (it is the trail to Westerfolds Park - not this ride!) - follow the trail under Burke Rd Bridge (Quite a high one) and along a little further through the tunnell under the Eastern Freeway. When you emerge from here, go "straight ahead" - which veers around between the trees to the Left, (The right hand path leads to Old Burke Rd.) and follow the path along the side of the freeway (up the hill) - cross the road to the golf course clubhouse, then down a steep section and around a quite long left curve (watch for cyclists coming up!) until you reach Bulleen Rd. Cross at the lights (watch the traffic entering the freeway - they don't like to stop!) Then head East along the trail at the side of the freeway. This track is rather well used and pretty clear in where you should go. Just follow the main pathway, you will go under Doncaster Rd and Elgar Rd. Between Station Street (Tram Rd.) and Middleborough Rd. there is a bridge across the Freeway, go over this, Follow the sealed trail along the side of the creek/freeway. Pass another bridge on your right, (don't go over it) then not much beyond that is a "serious hill" just after a sharp right hand turn. This is a tough climb so don't be afraid to walk up it! This is the limit of this ride at present, (May 2004) until the new section of track along the freeway opens up all the way out to Ringwood. On the return journey you can either try the Gravel side of the path or if you don't mind Roads, ride South along Springvale Rd until you reach Springfield Rd, which has a marked Bicycle Lane on it, and you can follow that down as far as Middleborough Rd, where there is a special "bike lane" on the Northern side of the road, next to the regular footpath. Watch for cars backing out of driveways though! This takes you down to Elgar Rd. where you join the Bushy Creek Trail, follow that along until you re-join the Freeway track you went up earlier! Then back home.(Dights Falls) RIDE 4 - LOOP Ride - (the 4 trail ride!) Capital City Trail, Outer Circle Railway Trail, This ride combines 4 different trails together to make one large loop. Some sections are a little confusing, and it may seem like you are going the wrong way (maybe you are!) but it should all come together if my directions are OK. Choosing an easy Starting Point for this ride is difficult, as you can access the trail from most of the inner eastern suburbs. Start - Walmer Street Footbridge - Melways 2H F2. Capital City Trail. (We will attempt the clockwise loop, seems easier that way!) Head North across the footbridge, then at the top of the track, where there is a drink fountain, turn Left and head along there, where you will shortly come out on the side of the Yarra Boulevard (Kew), follow this down the hill (on the "footpath" - shared path?) until you start to go around a right curve, there is a short track here leading to a bridge (Collins Bridge) across the Yarra, cross this bridge, then (joy of joys!) take your bike down the stairs to the track at the side of the river. follow this trail along ( a few possible turn offs but basically easy to follow) through the Collingwood Childrens Farm and under Johnston Street, all the way around to Dights Falls. Staying near the main river, cross the entrance to Merri Creek, and then after crossing the bridge (small one) do a "hard Left" under the freeway and follow this trail (still Capital City) along the side of the freeway and "up the hill!" Cross Yarra Bend Rd and go through Fairfield Park. This brings you out at Fairfield Boat House, - go down the "driveway" to the bottom of the hill, where you will cross the pipe bridge (walk if busy!) Then follow the sealed trail up the hill (very steep) until you reach the top of the Yarra Boulevard ( yes again, it's a different section!) Now for the tricky bit! Ride down the hill, (that's easy!) until you reach Chandler Highway. (Turn Right) Here you need to cross over - there are lights, they take thier time, but be patient! Cross over the freeway on the bridge watching for entering freeway traffic, this is hard to see on this corner. Continue along Chandler Highway and you will come to the start of the Outer Circle Trail. This can be followed reasonably easily (cross Whitehorse Rd - No lights!) all the way down to Prospect Hill Road in Camberwell. Now onto the Anniversary Trail. This is the hard part to navigate. When you reach Prospect Hill Road and the Trail seems to end, cross the road and head up the hill toward the Train Line, then turn Left along Spencer Street. Ride down here until you reach Riversdale Park, where you will re-join the track, until it reaches Riversdale Rd. Cross here at the lights, Go Left until the first side street - Fordham Ave. where the "footpath/trail" resumes and you should be able to follow the trail reasonably easily all the way to Toorak Rd, where once again crossing the road is difficult. The trail resumes on the opposite side near the train line, however you may need to go up and cross at the lights if it's busy. Follow the trail again all the way along (cross High St, Ashburton - use pedestrian lights again if required) All the way down past Alamein Station across Ryeburn Ave at the end of the good section of trail, Follow the trail around and down to Gardiners Creek Trail. Down a steep hill/bridge. Then TURN RIGHT!! The Gardiners Creek Trail zig zags around quite a bit across the creek and some roads, but as long as you follow the creek fairly closely you should manage OK. It's too hard to try to describe all the crossings here, but they are "mostly" obvious, Watch out for the sharp "downhill corner" under High Street (Glen Iris), and try to follow the creek as closely as possible, as there are a few trails leading away which generally go out to other streets, etc... You can follow this back all the way to the under Freeway Bridge ( We call it St.Kevin Bridge - but apparently it's the Gardiners Ck. Bridge) a nice flat concrete path supported under the freeway! Which brings you back to the Yarra Boulevard (Hawthorn). Turn RIGHT once you come off the ramp from the under freeway bridge, and follow this trail (Capital City again!) all the way back to the Walmer Street Bridge! |
